Arizona minimum wage to remain at $7.25 per hour in 2010

The minimum wage in Arizona will remain unchanged at $7.25 per hour in 2010, due to a decrease in the cost of living (The Industrial Commission of Arizona Press Release, September 8, 2009).

Arizona voters enacted the "Raise the Minimum Wage for Working Arizonans Act" in 2006. This voter initiative established a state minimum wage and provides for an annual increase based on any increase in the cost of living, as measured by the federal Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers, U.S. City Average for all items during the 12-month period ending each August 31 (CPI-U). The CPI-U is a national index covering the cost of goods and services. The CPI-U decreased by 1.5% for the 12-month period ending August 2009.

The Industrial Commission of Arizona determined at a public meeting held on October 7, 2009, that Arizona's minimum wage will not increase in 2010 because the CPI-U decreased and the Minimum Wage Act does not provide for a decrease in the state minimum wage rate. Therefore, the minimum wage in Arizona will continue to be the same rate as the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour through 2010.
