Average HSA balances grow to almost $1,000
In the first quarter of 2009, average health savings account (HSA) balances for individuals grew to $960, up from $697 in the first quarter of 2008, according to recent research from health care banker Canopy Financial.
The report, HSA Market Report Q1-2009, also found that average balances for family accounts rose to $1,720 in the first quarter of 2009, up from $1,419 in the first quarter of 2008.
Canopy found that the average individual HSA account holder was age 42 and contributed $116 monthly to his or her HSA in the first quarter of 2009. For that same time period, the average monthly employer contribution increased from $69 to $113 for individual HSAs.
The average family HSA account holder was age 45 and contributed an average of $239 monthly. The average monthly employer contribution rose more significantly for family HSAs, to $266 for the first quarter of 2009 from $133 in the previous quarter.
According to Canopy, the average amount spent from individual HSAs was $81 per month in the first quarter of 2009, down from $83.54 in the last quarter of 2008. Likewise, the average spent from family HSAs was $103 monthly, down from $108.19.
