Checklist: Effective Reverse Mentoring Programs

Both generations can benefit from an effective reverse mentoring program:

  • Make mentoring a two-way street: Reverse mentoring requires openness on the part of both the older worker and the younger worker; the mentor must be patient and the student must check his or her ego at the door.
  • Set objectives: Don't let it be a haphazard encounter between two people with different perspectives, but, instead, stick to a schedule and pursue a list of goals so that each person feels comfortable imparting their expertise.
  • Treat each other with respect: Don't call the younger employee "kid"; also realize how terrifying it is for an older employee to look bad.
  • Consider generational differences: Be aware that a person's behavior or attitude might be a generational trait, but don't stereotype someone just because he or she was born in a certain decade.
