Checklist: Workplace violence security audit

Often an outside security company can come into the workplace to perform an audit. A good security audit will answer the following questions:

Who is allowed in which areas?

How will persons who are authorized to be in an area be identified?

         What privileges will visitors have?

What privileges will temporary employees have?

Who will enforce access restrictions and how?

Will people entering the facility be searched or asked if they are carrying weapons?

Will employees be allowed to carry knives or potential weapons at work?

Who will maintain the security system and who will test it?

After conducting an audit and an assessment of security practices, employers will decide what measures are needed for their facilities. There are a broad range of protective measures such as:

         strategically placed mirrors in hallways

         a card access system

         closed-circuit TV

a system for issuing and collecting keys

         metal detectors

stickers with emergency numbers for each telephone

alarm systems with silent panic buttons

         effective lighting

         multiple exits

avoiding furniture placement that creates a trap for someone who is fleeing another
