How many PTO (paid time off) days should employees receive?

The allocation of PTO (paid time off) days may be based on seniority (the number of days increases as service increases) or by employment category, such as part-time/full-time or exempt/nonexempt.

According to a 2003 SHRM survey of 341 HR professionals, the average number of PTO days offered is as follows:

  • Less than one year: 13.24;

  • One to less than two years: 16.58;

  • Two to less than three years; 17.40;

  • Three to less than five years: 18.55;

  • Five to less than 10 years: 22.04; and

  • Ten or more years: 25.30.
