What are the employment and unemployment rates among people with disabilities?
It has been widely believed that individuals with disabilities typically face a higher rate of unemployment than individuals without disabilities. Now there is data to back it up. The Department of Labor's Office of Disability Employment Policy began sponsoring monthly reporting of employment and unemployment data on individuals with disabilities in February 2009 using data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ Current Population Survey (CPS). The CPS provides comprehensive information on the employment status of the civilian, non-institutional population 16 years of age and older. Six disability questions have been added to the CPS to satisfy a requirement specified in Executive Order 13078, signed by President Bill Clinton, to measure the employment status of people with disabilities on a timely basis. Current employment and unemployment data on individuals with disabilities can be found at http://www.bls.gov/cps/cpsdisability.htm .
