Why should employers offer outplacement counseling?

Both employers and separated employees can benefit from outplacement counseling. From the standpoint of the employee who has just lost a job, outplacement services help the employee to accept the best possible job in the least amount of time. The employee is provided with the guidance and assistance of counselors and company support during the job search.

The employer can also realize benefits from outplacement. Adverse effects on internal employee relations may be alleviated, and the separated employee may carry a better opinion of the former employer to the public. Moreover, the existence of an outplacement service can make the personnel function of employee appraisal much more realistic.

Employees that are receiving outplacement services are sponsored by the company that has released them and are counseled on an individual basis. The former employer pays the counseling fee, but cost savings can be expected.
